CHAPTER EIGHT
Olivia gaped while Lewis grimaced.
I've really done it now, haven't I?' he said with a self-disgusted snort.
'Blotted my copybook wel and truly. My only defence is that flunking something is not doing it, Olivia. If men were condemned on their sexual thoughts, then they'd al be on death row. I read somewhere that a man thinks about sex every ten minutes. That's an exaggeration of course,' he added, a rueful smile twisting his mouth. 'I'm sure it's only every eleven or twelve.'
A wildly sexual glint sparkled in his eyes as they raked over her astonished face, lingering for a few tel ing moments on her parted lips. Olivia snapped her mouth shut and his self-mocking smile twisted some more. 'I take it I'l have the pleasure of your resignation on my desk first thing Monday morning?'
Olivia almost groaned. Lewis's admission, plus his words about pleasure and desk, instantly recal ed her own outrageous fantasy about his desk on that fateful afternoon. It hadn't been true...then. She could not claim such innocence at this moment. With Lewis's startling confession that he'd been desiring her, she could not stop such a scenario from sweeping into her mind.
Its effect was immediate. Her pulse rate soared, and her nipples peaked hard under her silk camisole, shocking her rigid
'I...I don't think that's necessary,' she said stiffly.
'I'm surprised,' he admitted.
'So am I,' she countered feelingly. She'd known she'd been more aware of Lewis's attractions since her return to work. But she could never have anticipated this stunningly sexual reaction to his own stunningly sexual admission. There wasn't even any champagne to blame. Her mother would have been thril ed, Olivia conceded. But she wasn't quite so optimistic. On Lewis's side, he was admitting to nothing but strictly sexual desires. He'd also admitted to being very lonely. Loneliness and frustration had obviously made him vulnerable to her. Affairs between bosses and their secretaries were common enough. The long hours they worked together bred an enforced intimacy which could be easily tipped over into something even more intimate. How much easier when that line had already been crossed once before!
Her mother clearly thought sex was a way to win men's love. Olivia knew differently. Men could separate sex and love without any trouble at al . What was startling her so much at that moment was that she'd thought women were different in that regard
She'd thought she was different. Now she wasn't so sure. Had her confusing feelings earlier on tonight been driven by an emotional yearning, or a strictly sexual one? Was she fal ing in love with the father of her baby, or not?
Lewis's head tilted to one side as he studied her closely. Olivia feared her face was tel ingly pink. She felt terribly hot, sitting there with her madly racing heart and appal ingly erect nipples.
'Do you want ray solemn promise never to make a pass?' he asked. Olivia stared at him. It was a dangerously worded question. To say yes would be hypocritical.
